This Guy, No Help

You know how the basketball brackets end up working out. Someone in the office (usually a girl) ends up winning by accident.

This is because the experts don’t really know any better than you do.

Rock Madness is a different story. Having watched this happen for a few years now, I feel like I know the ins and outs of Rock Madness Bracketology. I’m here to help.

I’m not going to fill out your bracket for you, but I do have some theories I’ll share that might help you win.

Spike’s Rules Of Rock Madness

1. Look for the first round upset – It doesn’t ALWAYS happen, but there’s usually a big upset in the first round. Last year, Iron Maiden was within just a few votes of knocking off AC/DC in the first round. A lot of times, people just assume the favorite will win, and don’t vote enough in their favor. If there’s an upset that you see as a possibility, don’t be scared to pick it. In the basketball tournament, a 16 has never beaten a 1. That’s not the case in Rock Madness.

2. Who has the crazier fan base? – Sure, Kiss isn’t as great or historic as Led Zeppelin. However, if the two were to face each other, you’d have to ask yourself, whose fans would come out stronger to vote? The answer may not be with the favorite.

3. The stoner factor – Stoner bands get votes. It happens every year. Stoners have different priorities than the rest of us, and making sure their band gets the respect they deserve is one of those priorities. However, waking up early is NOT one of those prioirities. When looking at the Stoner Factor, make sure you take note of what time the match up is happening.

4. The metal horns – Metal fans are crazy. Remember this. Very crazy. Hide your kids, walk on the other side of the street kind of crazy.

5. People love when giants fall – You know how we are here in Philly, we always want to knock someone down a notch. Whether they deserve it or not. One of the reasons Metallica didn’t win last year, is because some people just wanted to take them down a notch. They wanted to see a different winner. Van Halen should watch out for that this year.
